Margaret Dwight Shelton, formerly Margaret Dwight Barrett and earlier Margaret Lyman Dwight, is a retired educator, historian, author, and civic leader in the United States. She has lived mich of her life in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.
She was a professor of history at Alcorn State in Mississippi.[1]
She was a teenager in Hattiesburg during the Civil Rights movement. She received a B.S. in history from the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg and a masters degree from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Illinois as well as a doctorate from the University of Missouri in Columbia, Missouri. She wrote a viewpoint on the history and progress of Hattiesburg ("Hub City") in 2016.[2]
She was photographed at a Freedom School at Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Hattiesburg.[3]
In 1986/1987 she was Fulbright Scholar as a lecturer at the University of Niamey in Niger.[4]
She has served on Hattiesburg's Historic Commission.[5]
