Brian Wambui Chira (July 6, 1996 – March 16, 2024) was a Kenyan tiktoker[1][2] and live streamer.[3][4]

Biography

[edit]

Chira was born in Githunguri, Kiambu.[5] He was orphaned at age eight, when his mother died from HIV/AIDS,[5][6][7] and was raised by his grandmother.[8] He later became a caretaker to his orphaned cousins.[5] He dropped out of university after issues with fees.[8]

Chira struggled with depression and alcohol abuse, which he attributed to his stigmatized status as an HIV positive man.[5][8]

Brian Chira became an internet sensation in December 2022 when he was interviewed with a local TV station "NTV" on a video titled "Witness" as an accident witness.[9][10][11]

Chira accumulated around 400,000 followers within a year.[8][12]

In August 2023, he was arrested and charged for online harassment of another TikToker known as Azziad Nasenya and later he was released on a 50,000 bail.[8][13][14]

Death

[edit]

In the early morning of 16 March 2024, Chira died in a hit-and-run accident near Nairobi.[8][15] Chira had been returning home from a night out in Gacharage.[16][17]

In response to his death, fans raised US$60,000. He was buried two weeks later, with around 5,000 people attending.[12] Some of the attendees were reportedly unruly, interrupting religious leaders during the funeral service.[8]
