"Air" is a song recorded by South Korean singer Yeji for her debut extended play of the same name. Yeji participated in writing the lyrics of the synth-pop song, which aimed to express the feeling of intense immersion felt while performing on stage. It was released as the lead single by JYP Entertainment on March 10, 2025.

Background and release

On January 17, 2025, it was announced that Yeji was preparing for her solo debut.[1] On February 10, JYP Entertainment released a trailer for Yeji's debut EP,[2] alongside a promotional schedule.[3] On February 14, the tracklist was released, confirming "Air" as the lead single.[4] On March 3, an album spoiler was released with preview of the song.[5] Music video teasers were then released on March 5 and 7.[6][7] On March 14, 2025, Yeji released the English version of the song.[8]

Composition

"Air" is a synth-pop song, with 80's inspired bass rhythms, and an addictive hook.[9] Yeji aimed to capture the feeling of immersion in her contribution to the lyric-writing of the song.[10][11] For her, that feeling has mainly revolved around dance. She channeled her love for performing into the song's narrative, and described the story behind the song as reminiscent of the classic Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale "The Red Shoes". She further explained: "It's about being so consumed by dance that you can't stop, even if you want to. That uncontrollable urge is captured in the lyrics and the music video."[12]

The music video highlights Yeji's refined artistry, honed throughout her idol career. Yeji performs intricate, fluid dance movements across various settings, culminating in a dramatic climactic finale where she leads a full dance crew in an empty warehouse. The video emphasizes the strength and presence of Yeji's reputation as a performer, and aims to express her feelings of immersion felt while dancing on stage.[12][13]

Yeji performed "Air" on four music programs: Mnet's M Countdown on March 13, KBS's Music Bank on March 14, MBC's Show! Music Core on March 15, and SBS's Inkigayo on March 16.[14][15]
